A Troy school teacher faces 14 new charges in relation to the sexual abuse of children.
According to documents filed Friday by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office, Jason E. Ehlers, 36, of Bethalto, has been charged with four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, four counts of criminal sexual assault, one count of indecent solicitation of a child, one felony count of sexual exploitation of a child, and four misdemeanor counts of sexual exploitation of a child.
According to Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons, the original investigation has led to seven children that the defendant allegedly abused.
"My office is committed to seeing that justice is done for every victim of such a heinous crime," Gibbons said. "When someone victimizes a child, it must be dealt with swiftly and severely so that they will no longer be able to prey upon our kids."
The suspect was a teacher in the Triad School District. Prior to that he was a teacher in Bethalto. The investigation revealed that the abuse took place in Ehlers' home. Little information about the victims was released to protect their privacy. But Gibbons said the suspect knew his victims before the abuse took place.
Ehlers was charged two weeks ago with two counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual assault in relation to sexual abuse of a male family members who was less than 13 years old.
Bail on the new charges is set at $250,000. He was already in the Madison County Jail on $250,000 bail for the initial charges.
