A former church went up in flames early Sunday in Alorton.
The church at 57 Jarvis Place had been converted into a home many years ago, according to Alorton Mayor JoAnn Reed. The woman who lived there entered a nursing home a long time ago, Reed said, and since then it was a vacant building.
"It was boarded up, but people had been dumping trash in there," Reed said.
No one yet knows how the fire started, Reed said, but it was roaring by the time firefighters arrived shortly after 6 a.m. Sunday. While it might have been a squatter, there's no way to know yet, Reed said.
Approximately five other fire departments assisted Alorton Fire Department in fighting the blaze, which did not damage any other homes.
Reed said the Illinois State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire. If anyone has information about the fire, she said, they should call the Alorton Police Department at 271-4586.
