Just in time for his re-election campaign, Gov. Pat Quinn has rolled out what he calls "his" Welcome Home Illinois home buyer program. And he's shamelessly milking it for every potential vote he can get.
He was in Collinsville last week to put on a dog-and-pony show, complete with a testimonial from a grateful home buyer. It all fits nicely with his narrative that he's the candidate for the average Joe.
"... It's very good news for anybody who wants to be a homeowner and is maybe living paycheck to paycheck, raising kids, working a job. We don't want to have folks left out," he said.
No, wouldn't want that. Let's spend tax dollars Illinois doesn't have on down payment help and to lower the interest rate. And if this distracts from Quinn's call to make the state's temporary income tax increase permanent, all the better.
That'll be $30 million, taxpayers. Cha-ching!
