Shopping: Mother' Day gift ideas are blooming

Don't know how to arrange flowering plants or vegetables in your garden containers? If you can haul them -- big, small and in between -- to Effinger Garden Center in Belleville on Wednesday night, Rick, Trudy and their staff will be glad to help you figure out a design. It's all part of a Garden Party and Container Workshop at 6 p.m. Bring your pots (or choose from theirs to buy), pick some plants and they'll provide the soil, fertilizer and advice. Think how nice it will be to make the mess there!

While I was at Tuesday Morning in Fairview Heights, I spied some vintage-looking world globes. I'm not sure these are to be used for educational purposes, but they sure would look nice on a desk or bookshelf. They come in black and tan and the two smaller sizes ($12.99 and $14.99) are held in faux silver metal frames, while the largest size ($29.99) has its own black metal frame.

Do you make beer-can chicken? Bed, Bath & Beyond in Fairview Heights has a stainless-steel Beer Can Chicken Rack for $5.99.

Let the kids pop the top of Flower in a Can and they can grow basil, parsley, daisies, forget-me-nots or violets for Mom for Mother's Day. Each can comes with seeds, instructions and growing medium. Use the can as the container. Each is $1.99 at CVS Pharmacy in Swansea.

When is a flower planter more than a place to put blooms? When it's also a fountain. Home Depot in Belleville has a $69.99 two-tier vertical planter fountain made out of fiberclay with a natural stone look. It has a very classic Greek style to it. Plant flowers in the smaller top planter. Water flows out of the there into the bigger bottom one. A UL pump is included. The model number is FG0007BA. It would make a nice surprise, already set up and going for Mother's Day.

OK, some sales require good timing: JC Penney at St. Clair Square is holding a Super Saturday Sale. Guys, polo shirts from St. John's Bay are $9.99, Stafford dress shirts are $11.99 and a couple styles of flat-front summer shorts are $14.99 today, but only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. You'll find lots of other deals for the rest of the family, too, you just have to get there before 1!

In case you are a Starbucks frappuccino fan, the mall shop is offering a half-off sale on the drink from 3 to 5 p.m. daily through May 10 during its Frappucinno Happy Hour.

There's free wrapping and ribbon at Yankee Candle at the mall today only for Mother's Day gifts.

Time for "Kiddos and the Cow" today at Kiddo's, the children's specialty shop on the second floor near the entrance to the mall. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., children can choose a predrawn canvas to paint ($7 or $25, supplies included), enjoy some snacks from Chick-fil-A, get photos with the Cow and win cool prizes.

All dresses are $18 at Charlotte Russe at the mall through today.

This is simple to follow: Justice stores are cutting prices on everything by 40 percent through May 12.
