EDWARDSVILLE — A three-vehicle accident killed an Edwardsville woman and sent another person to the hospital early Monday.
Marilyn Clasen, 50, of Edwardsville, was pronounced dead at the scene of a three-car crash in the first block of Plum Street just before 7 a.m. Monday.
Clasen was driving a 2002 Chrysler minivan when it collided with a 2000 Ford SUV driven by Michael Heinemeier, 23, of Edwardsville. Heinemeier was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which police said were not life-threatening.
According to the Madison County Coroner's Office, Heinemeyer's southbound SUV crossed into Clasen's path, striking her vehicle head-on.
A third vehicle was unable to stop and struck the other two cars. The driver and a juvenile passenger were not injured, and were not named by police.
While Clasen was wearing a seatbelt and airbags did deploy, an autopsy showed that she died of blunt trauma to the head and neck, according to the Madison County Coroner's Office.
Edwardsville Police Chief Jay Keeven said the cause of the crash was not immediately known. The area was closed for several hours so the Illinois State Police could complete accident reconstruction.
Heinemeier had an outstanding warrant on a charge of battery. Due to his hospitalization, arrangements were made for Heinemeier to appear on that charge at a later date, Keeven said.
No immediate charges were filed in the crash. The accident remains under investigation by the Edwardsville Police Department. Funeral arrangements are pending.
