A Madison County man was jailed and his 6-year-old stepson was put in protective custody after investigators determined the boy was beaten with a curtain rod and a belt.

According to Madison County Sheriff's Department reports, Jessie J. Garcia, 22, of 6005 Vollmer Lane in Godfrey, was upset that his stepson got in trouble for standing up on the school bus. He was charged with aggravated battery of a child.

A teacher at the boy's school in Alton noticed what police called "an unusually large amount of bruising" and called the sheriff's department. The report indicated the boy's back was covered with marks and bruises from being beaten.

Garcia's bail was set at $250,000.
