SAUGET — The Gateway Grizzlies took an early three-run lead and held on for a 10-3 victory Wednesday against the Southern Illinois Miners in a scheduled 10-inning preseason game at GCS Ballpark.
Gateway took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, scoring a run on an error and a two-run double by outfielder Xavier Macklin.
Southern Illinois tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning on a three-run home run from Aaron Gates.
Gateway rallied for seven unanswered runs, scoring two in the seventh inning on a Garrett Vail two-run single and four in the eighth inning on a Niko Vasquez solo home run, a Madison Beaird two-run double and a Richard Seigel RBI double.
Beaird drove in a run on his third hit of the day in the final inning to finish off the Grizzies scoring.
Andrew Aizenstadt, Seth McWilliams and Luke Westphal all pitched two scoreless innings for Gateway.
Seigel and shortstop Glenn Walker collected two hits each.
The Grizzlies will host two more games this weekend.
Gateway is back in action Friday night when they take on the Frontier Greys in their third preseason game at 7:05 at GCS Ballpark.
The Grizzlies will play the Witichta Wingnuts, a Double-A American Association team featuring two former Grizzlies -- pitcher Tim Brown and infielder Ryan Khourey -- on Saturday. The game is slated to begin at 7:05 p.m.
The Grizzlies 2014 regular season opener is on May 16 when they take on the Traverse City Beach Bums at GCS Ballpark.
