Bulldogs are in the hunt at State Bass Fishing Tourney

— Highland Boat No. 2 was in fourth place after the first day of the State Bass Fishing Tournament at Carlyle Lake.

Highland Boat No. 2, with driver-coach Scott Sautman and team members Eric Luitjohan, Austin Niggli and Michael Frank, hauled in four bass weighing 11 pounds, 9 ounces.

Robinson was in first place with four bass weighing 16 pounds, 2 ounces, followed by Moline with five bass weighing 14 pounds, 9 ounces and Fox Lake Grant with five bass weighing 13 pounds, 3 ounces.

Highland Boat No. 1 was in 14th place with five bass that weighed 8 pounds, 5 ounces.

The Bulldogs have a history of success in the state tourney, having placed eighth in 2009, third and fourth in 2011 and first in 2012.

Belleville West and Granite City, two schools making their first appearance in the state tournament, were off the pace after each reeled in only one bass.

Belleville West's fish weighed 1 pound, 7 ounces, while Granite City's fish weighed 1 pounds, 6 ounces.

Waterloo was one of the 19 teams who didn't catch any fish during a tough day on the lake.

The tournament concludes with another round of fishing on Saturday.
