Former Belleville West and O'Fallon High boys basketball coach Dave Shannahan will be the guest speaker Friday for the Belleville Area Senior Men's Sports Group.

Shannahan coached boys basketball and golf at Belleville West from 1966-73. The coach of state championship golf teams in 1969, 1971 and 1973, Shannahan compiled a 110-79 (.582 percent) record in basketball, including a Sweet 16 appearance in the 1968 state tournament.
In 2009, he was named to the athletic Hall of Fame at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., where he lettered in basketball, track and tennis. After graduating in 1956 with a bachelor's degree in physical education, he later earned a master's degree in physics at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
In 1990, he was inducted into the hall of fame of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association, an organization that he helped establish in 1971. In addition to Belleville West, he coached on the high school level at Morrisville, Mo., Ava, Mo., Lewellen, Neb., Johnston City, O'Fallon and Waterloo.
From 1974-79, he coached men's basketball at Belleville Area College (now Southwestern Illinois), where he also taught physics.
