Crushed Grapes Wine Shop goes out of business

May 12, 2014

Edwardsville wine and spirits seller and microbrewer Crushed Grapes Wine Shop has gone out of business. Len and Arlene Scaturro opened the business at 1500 Troy Road in 1999.

Little Caesars Pizza at Collinsville Crossing has plans to relocate within the Collinsville shopping center and build a location with a drive-through lane. Stay tuned.

Belleville Diner Restaurant has closed. The building at 6401 W. Main St. in Belleville initially opened as a Hardee's years ago and has been home to a succession of independent eateries since.

FCB Bank has opened a Belleville branch in an existing building at 401 S. Illinois St. You can call the branch at 235-9090.

Leather maker Steve Rye has moved his store, Sole Survivor, from 25 E. Main St. to 125 E. Main St. in Belleville. You can still reach Sole Survivor at 618-234-0214.

And finally, Jan's Hallmark in Swansea will close later this month. Owner Don Tschannen Jr. owns the chain of Jan's Hallmark stores in the metro-east and opened the Swansea greeting card store at 2645 N. Illinois St. in 1989.

"It was a very difficult decision," Tschannen said. "But the store was getting older and tired, and with our commitment to customer service, from the standpoint that we have to put back into the store to update and add new technology, just tilted the balance. It didn't make sense to make the investment."

Tschannen bought his first store in Granite City in 1983. Jan, by the way, was the name of the Granite City greeting card store owner's wife. Tschannen decided to keep the name and went on to open more Hallmark stores under that name. He also owns Jan's Hallmark stores in Belleville and Shiloh.
