Downtown parking lot project advances in Collinsville

COLLINSVILLE - The project to turn a closed post office into more parking downtown took another step Monday with the hiring of an engineering firm.

The city council approved hiring Oates Associates to do the preliminary and design engineering for a parking lot with landscaping on the site across the street from City Hall.

The council voted last month to approve $250,000 for the purchase of the now-vacant post office property.

City leaders have said there is a growing need for parking, as new businesses open on Main Street, a block away. There has also been a shortage of parking around City Hall on days when municipal court sessions are held, according to City Manager Scott Williams.

Oates will be paid $34,000 for the engineering work. Councilwoman Karen Woolard abstained from the vote; she was the sole no vote in April when the council approved the project. There was no discussion among the council.

In other news, the city agreed to reimburse the landlord for Gracefully Yours Dance Academy part of the cost of replacing broken windows.
