Wong recalled from Memphis, Garcia optioned

May 14, 2014

— The St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday recalled second baseman Kolten Wong from Class AAA Memphis and optioned infielder Greg Garcia to the Redbirds.

Wong reported to Busch Stadium early Wednesday afternoon but was sent home with a stomach illness. He will not be in uniform at 7:15 p.m. when the Cardinals play the Cubs.

Wong, who was on the Opening Day roster for the first time, was optioned to Memphis on April 27 and batted .344 (22-for-64) with two home runs and 10 RBIs in 15 games.

The left-handed-hitting Wong batted .375 (6-for-16) with runners in scoring position and was 5-for-5 in stolen-base attempts.

Wong, 23, had a four-hit, four-RBI game Tuesday against Round Rock, including a home run, improving his average to .372.

In 20 games for the Cardinals this season, Wong batted .225 with a team-high three stolen bases.

Garcia drew a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the 12th inning Tuesday night for his first career RBI, and it gave the Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. It was the first time since 1974 that the Cardinals had won a game in walk-off fashion via a hit batsman.
