Illinois 15 is getting a $10 million facelift this summer.
"We're aiming for this to be done right before Labor Day weekend," says Joe Gasaway, IDOT project engineer for the contract.
The stretch from Illinois 159 to Interstate 255 will have lane restrictions while crews patch, mill and resurface the road.
Construction specifics are still being determined for the project, but lane restrictions will be lifted during rush hours to and from St. Louis. No westbound lanes will be closed from 6 to 9 a.m. and no eastbound lanes will be closed from 3 to 6 p.m., Gasaway said.
Some commutes may be a bit bumpy, but overnight work will ensure rush hour to and from St. Louis will have two open lanes by using a concrete accelerator requiring only five hours to cure.
Gasaway said the contractors will start at one end and work toward the middle before going to the other end and again working toward the middle. The joint venture is between Kilian Corp. and Keeley and Sons, Inc. and will restrict lanes only that they are actively working in.
The contractors and IDOT are working on exact staging dates. Gasaway said ramp work will be done overnight.
Further east of that construction along Illinois 15 is an ongoing and unrelated project, slated to end next summer. One lane of Illinois 15 is closed in each direction for bridge work at Illinois 13. Much of that work so far has been out of sight for Illinois 15 drivers, but has demanded lane restrictions. Illinois 13 under Illinois 15 will be closed for the work through the end of the year.
Neither of these projects will have the speed indicator signs that IDOT and state Rep. Jay Hoffmann, D-Swansea, announced for work zones earlier this week. Those speed indicator signs are promised for upcoming contracts.
