A Godfrey woman is facing theft charges for allegedly stealing money from an elderly woman in her care.

Clara A. Stewart, 41, of the 300 block of Big Arch Road, was charged Friday with felony theft over $500 by the Madison County State's Attorney's Office. Stewart is a certified nursing assistant who works for an independent company contracted by the elderly woman, and her family, to provide basic in-home health care, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's department received a theft complaint last month from an 89-year-old resident of the Methodist Village, 5201 Asbury Court in Godfrey. The elderly woman reported the theft of approximately $6,000 from her apartment. The victim told authorities an unknown person had been stealing money from her apartment for several months.

Investigators with the Madison County Sheriff's Office investigated the complaint and identified Stewart as a possible suspect. After meeting with Stewart as she left the elderly woman's home Thursday, investigators developed evidence linking Stewart to the theft.

Stewart was transported to the Madison County Jail. She was being held Friday in lieu of $40,000.

Police asked that anyone having information related to this investigation or other incidents involving Stewart contact the Madison County Sheriff's Office at 618-692-4433, 618-692-0871 or 618-296-3000.
