EAST ST. LOUIS — Two people were killed over the weekend in separate incidents in East St. Louis, marking the city's eighth and ninth homicides of the year.
In the first case, Marcus Haynes, 21, of 1200 Market St., Apartment 41-H, was fatally wounded at 10:46 a.m. Friday in the John Robinson Homes.
He was pronounced dead at 11:25 a.m. in the emergency room at Touchette Regional Hospital.
"When officers arrived at the John Robinson Homes, they found the victim on the first floor" of an apartment, between the living room and the kitchen, Police Chief Michael Floore said.
Witnesses told police that someone knocked on the victim's door, and when he answered, the unknown shooter fired several shots, striking Haynes in the chest three times, Floore said.
Police believe the victim knew the gunman, Floore said, but there are no suspects and the murder weapon has not been found.
In the second case, a man was killed at 3 a.m. Monday in the 1200 block of Gaty Avenue. His body was found lying in the street.
There are few details at this time. Floore said police have not identified the victim and have no suspects,
Police said they do not have a motive for either shooting but continue to investigate and talk to people in both areas.
