Police were investigating the shooting death of a Venice man Monday.

Kenneth C. Deal, 43, was found at the intersection of Third and Washington Avenue on Monday afternoon and taken to a hospital, according to Granite City Police Lt. Mike Nordstorm, deputy commander of the Major Case Squad. Deal died at the hospital, Nordstrom said.

Witnesses provided a vehicle description of a suspect car to a Madison police officer.

The unidentified officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the suspect refused to stop, Nordstrom said. The officer pursued the vehicle, which went through Madison, Brooklyn and Venice and on into St. Louis, where police lost the suspect.

Someone in the suspect vehicle was firing shots at the Brooklyn and Madison squad cars that were pursuing the vehicle. No one was injured, Nordstrom said.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was activated at 3 p.m. Monday.
