Belleville West grad is OVC Baseball Player of the Week

Belleville West graduate Kane Sweeney, a junior first baseman at Morehead State, was named Ohio Valley Conference Baseball Player of the Week on Monday.

Sweeney hit .421 (8-for-19) in four games last week with two doubles, one triple, two home runs, 12 RBIs and eight runs. The Millstadt resident also walked six times and did not strike out in 25 plate appearances.

Sweeney had a grand slam and five RBIs against Tennessee on Tuesday, then added four RBIs in the series opener against Jacksonville State and was 4-for-7 with two RBIs on Friday.

Sweeney has two or more hits 21 of Morehead State's 54 games and is hitting .313 with 17 doubles, nine home runs, a team-leading 47 RBIs and 39 runs. He also has a .426 on-base percentage and .525 slugging percentage.

Morehead State meets SIU Edwardsville at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament at Jackson, Tenn.
