What is state Rep. Jay Hoffman up to? Supporters of a bill that would eliminate unregulated slot-like machines would sure like to know.
A bill approved last year inadvertently opened a loophole for these machines, and the Illinois Gaming Board and the video poker industry are working to close it. The bill passed the state Senate, and supporters wanted Rep. Bob Rita, D-Blue Island, to handle the bill in the House. Instead Hoffman, D-Swansea, rushed in and picked it up, which puts him in control of the bill's fate.
Maybe Hoffman thinks eliminating these machines is great idea and he is just eager to help it along. Or maybe he wants to help bury the bill so bars can continue to have the machines without state regulation. Hoffman isn't saying.
The legislative session is set to end next week, so we'll know soon enough what Hoffman does. Stay tuned.
