In memory of a patriot

May 24, 2014

In December, one of the tri-cities' most devoted and dedicated patriots passed away: Steve Concovich. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and spent World War II in the South Pacific under his mentor, Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Steve liked to portray the general in the Veterans' Day parades. I restored a World War II Jeep and cannon, so we teamed up to participate when invited in parades from St. Louis to Springfield, Ill.

Steve was the instigator in the delivery of the jet fighter plane located at Granite City Wilson Park and was instrumental in the erection of the memorial honoring all the fallen heroes of the tri-cities from World War I to the present. He was also given the 1998 citizen award -- hometown heroes award.
