Yellow Jackets down Okawville for softball regional title

— The New Athens Yellow Jackets completed a sweep of regional titles in all three girls team sports with an 8-3 win over the Okawville Rockets on Saturday in the championship game of the Class 1A Marissa Regional.

New Athen also won regional championships in volleyball and basketball during the 2013-14 school year.

The Yellow Jackets collected 11 hits in the game.

New Athens pitcher Abby Marlow allowed six hits and only two earned runs. She struck out seven and walked two.

The Yellow Jackets (18-13) will play Mount Olive at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Okawville Sectional.

Mount Olive beat Bunker Hill 5-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Lebanon Regional.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 2-1 to the Rockets before rallying for four runs in the bottom of the third inning. They added a run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.

At the plate, Marlow went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.

Courtie Niederbach contributed two hits, incuding a double, and two RBIs, while Denae White had two hits, including a triple, and two runs scored.

Allison Stolte had a double and two RBIs and Alleen Dutkanych had a triple and an RBI.

Macy Wienstroer went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs for the Rockets.

Class 2A

Vandalia Regional

Central 11, Greenville 7

Taylor Rakers went 5-for-5 with two doubles, a homer and two RBIs in leading the Central Cougars past the Greenville Comets.

The Cougars (16-12) advance to play Teutopolis Wooden Shoes (25-3) at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in Effingham St. Anthony Sectional.

The Wooden Shoes, who upset the Cougars' girls basketball team in Salem Sectional this past winter, beat Marshall 8-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Casey-Westfield Regional.

The Cougars slugged out 21 hits against the Comets. Alli Lewis, Abby Rattermann and Mady Ratterman all chipped in three hits apiece.

The Cougars scored three runs in third, fifth and seventh inning,

Winning pitcher Kaylee Schrand allowed 10 hits and seven runs. She weathered a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the win.

Class 2A Hillsboro Regional

Dupo 7, Staunton 0

Megan Brown struck out 11 en route to a four-hit shutout as the Dupo Tigers beat Staunton Bulldogs for a regional title.

It was the Tigers' first regional title since 2009 when they placed fourth in the state in Class 1A.

The Tigers (27-6) will play Pleasant Plains at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Litchfield Sectional.

Pleasant Plains beat Athens 10-2 Saturday in the championship game of the Athens Regional.

The Tigers pounced for five runs in the first inning against Stauton, which was more than enough run support for Brown.

The Bulldogs end their season at 17-5.
