By the numbers: WalletHub's best and worst states for military retirees

WalletHub, a personal finance website, recently ranked the 50 states and the District of Columbia for their desirability as places for military retirees to live:

Based on a wide range of differently weighted criteria, with a major focus on taxes and health care access, WalletHub ranked the five best places for military retirees as follows:

1.) Wyoming

2.) New Hampshire

3.) Montana

4.) South Dakota

5.) Nebraska

The lowest ranked:

47.) Illinois

48.) Arizona

49.) Indiana

50.) New York

51.) California

WalletHub used state rankings in three broad categories to determine its list of best and worst states for retirees. The categories: Economic environment; quality of life; and heath care.

Illinois earned 47th out of 51 places by placing No. 34 in economic environment; No. 50 in quality of life; and No. 24 in Health Care, according to the WalletHub ranking.

In contrast, WalletHub cited Wyoming as the top-ranked state for military retirees on the basis of its high rankings for economic environment (No. 4); quality of life (No. 3); and health care (No. 5).
