The Gateway Grizzlies scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and finish off their homestand with a 7-3 win Thursday night against the Rockford Aviators at GCS Ballpark in Sauget.
With the scored tied 3-3 in the sixth inning, Blake Shepherd picked up an RBI groundout and Madison Beird provided a cushion with a three-run home run to right field to give the Grizzlies a four-run lead. The home run for Beaird was his third of the season.
Rockford led early in front of the crowd of 3,227 on a Ryan Breen RBI single in the second inning against Gateway starting pitcher Andrew Aizenstadt.
Gateway (13-6) tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second on a solo homer for Michael Wing, which was his third in as many games.
Wing finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and two runs to raise his average to .359.
The Grizzlies scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Wing drove in his second run of the game on a single in the fourth and a run came in on a passed ball in the fifth.
Tanner Witt helped tie the game in the sixth inning with a two-run double for Rockford.
Aizenstadt left the game after 5 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits.
Chris DeBoo (1-0) picked up his first professional win. The right-hander from San Diego pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Aaron Baker threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save of the season.
The Grizzlies begin a six-game road trip with the opener of a three game series at Windy City on Friday night. Right-hander Tucker Jensen (3-0) will make the start for the Grizzlies in the 7:05 p.m. game.
