An elderly woman is dead, another woman is in critical condition and a man is in custody after a crash Sunday night in East St. Louis.

Killed in the crash was Helen J. Bush, 86, of East St. Louis. She died from her injuries at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.

Teenette Dae, 72, of East St. Louis, on Sunday night was in the intensive care unit in critical condition at St. Louis University Medical Center, police detective Darlene Diggs said.

A 30-year-old man was in police custody while investigators seek charges.

The crash was at 6:57 p.m. Sunday at 17th Street and Bond Avenue in East St. Louis, police said. Three vehicles were involved.

The suspect was driving a black 1987 Monte Carlo heading east on Bond Avenue. Bush and Dae were in a white 2013 Nissan heading south on 17th Street. A 1999 gold Chrysler was heading west on Bond Avenue.

"The driver of the gold Chrysler says he was approaching the stop sign at 17th and Bond and saw the Monte Carlo coming at a high rate of speed. The Nissan was already at the stop sign and was getting ready to proceed across the intersection. The Monte Carlo struck the Nissan and spun it around and hit the gold Chrysler," Diggs said.

The Chrysler driver was slightly injured but not hospitalized, she said.
