Bishop's $100 gala is out of line

June 9, 2014

I was very disappointed when I read in my parish newsletter about the celebration being held in honor of Catholic Bishop Edward Braxton's 70th birthday.

I understand the desire to celebrate the good work being done by Catholic schools in the Belleville Diocese, which is touted as the main reason for the dinner. However, this party is being held at a country club at the cost of $100 per person.

Considering the recent history of the Catholic Church, such an ostentatious display is out of line. Pope Francis is leading the faithful to be humble and quietly do good works. We should all be paying more attention to that message.
