Deserters must be punished

June 10, 2014

This is my response to the letter about recently released POW Bowe Bergdahl: Whatever his rank, it does not matter. He is still guilty if he went absent without leave and deserted his post without authority. He should receive a general court martial and, if he's found guilty, spend the rest of his life in Leavenworth.

When we are sworn into the U.S. military, we are sworn to defend and protect.

When I was in the military in Europe, I witnessed a court martial of a fellow soldier who had a lesser charge against him than Bergdahl. This soldier was a true comrade and friend to me. At his court martial he was found guilty. His rank was reduced from sergeant to private, he was fined and transferred out of the company.

Bergdahl is no hero to the rest of us who served our country. Think of all who gave their lives in the invasion of Normandy during World War II; the 70th anniversary was observed on June 6.

God protect the USA.
