Homicide house: Second killing in 3 years at East St. Louis residence

News-DemocratJune 17, 2014

Multiple shots were fired Tuesday in an East St. Louis house, leaving a man dead, another wounded and a third in police custody.

It was the second time within three years that someone was killed in the house.

Police Chief Michael Floore said police were called about the shots at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday inside 805 N. 79th St.

"We have not identified everyone. There were three people in the residence when police arrived. One was dead, one wounded and one taken in for questioning," Floore said.

A deputy coroner pronounced the man dead at 1:53 p.m.

Floore said the house was a rental and the owner could not be reached, so police were waiting for a search warrant before moving the body. As of 4:15 p.m. the body remained in the house.

The wounded man was taken to a St. Louis hospital. His condition was not available.

Floore said his department and the Illinois State Police were jointly investigating the homicide and shooting.

On Jan 22, 2012, one man was killed and another hit in the head after two men broke in to the same house. Jeremy M. Smith and Robert A. Hopkins were both convicted of home invasion, but charges for the murder of Christopher Rush were dismissed.
