Allegiant Airlines will take a seven-week hiatus from flights between MidAmerica airport and Orlando, Fla., beginning in August.

Flights between the Mascoutah-based airport and Orlando Sanford International Airport will stop between Aug. 10 and Oct. 2. The annual seasonal break helps Allegiant ensure 90 percent capacity on all flights -- which the company said helps it provide low-cost airfare.

"We see a decrease in demand for flights to Florida in late August and early October, so instead of inefficiently operating half empty flights, we opt to suspend the route. This type of schedule flexibility keeps costs down and keeps fares low throughout the rest of the year," Allegiant spokeswoman Jessica Wheeler said.

Flights on the route will resume Oct. 2 and tickets may be purchased through Feb. 12, 2015, which is the end of the current booking schedule.
