Dockdogs competition will raise money for rescues

June 18, 2014

Dogs will raise money for dogs this weekend at the Splash for Rescues event sponsored by the Belleville Area Humane Society and Camp Bow Wow.

Splash for Rescues is part of the international Dockdogs aquatic competition. Dogs jump off a 40-foot dock into a 4-foot-deep pool to compete for distance (Big Air), height (Extreme Vertical) and speed (Speed Retrieve).

The event begins at 3 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday at Eckert's Country Store, Illinois 15 and Greenmount Road in Belleville. Admission is free for spectators (donations appreciated). Entry fee for competing dogs is $30 at Eckert's.

About 100 dogs are expected to compete in the event put on by Gateway DockDogs.

"One of the dogs holds the world record in Extreme Vertical," said Paul Stroh, owner of Camp Bow Wow in Swansea. "That's Grizz, a Belgian Malinois from St. Louis., and he'll be trying to set a new world record here." His dad, Baxter "The Flying Malinois," also will return to compete in the Belleville competition, "but Grizz can now outjump him."

The public is invited to watch at no charge.

"All we ask for is a donation to the dog rescues," Stroh said. There will be up to nine dog rescues on hand. "Spectators can get right up to the pool, as long as they don't touch it, and they can get as wet as they want in the splash zone."

There will be seven waves, or competitions. Dogs that score in the top six places in each will compete in the finals competition on Sunday.
