In preparation for next school year, the school boards at Belleville District 118 and District 201 hired new educators at meetings this week.

Central Junior High in Belleville District 118 will have a new dean of students starting July 1 -- Lacey Schmersahl, who is currently a fourth-grade teacher at Union Elementary School.

District 118 Superintendent Matt Klosterman said Schmersahl will replace current dean of students Madonna Harris, who resigned to take an administrator position in another school district. Schmersahl will earn an annual salary of $68,500, he said.

District 118 school board also hired special education teacher Ariane Tyler at its meeting Tuesday. Tyler, who previously taught at Madison Community Unit District 12, will teach at Douglas Elementary School this coming year.

In other news, the District 118 board approved:

* A yearly material fee of $55 for students, which is the same as the previous year

* The bid from Rooters American Maintenance for parking lot work at the Abraham Lincoln Elementary School and West Junior High complex. The work is not to exceed $178,800. The project is expected to begin soon and be finished by the start of school.

* Renewing the district's contract for Watts Copy Systems

School board members at District 201 hired four new teachers during its meeting Monday. The new hires are as follows:

* Rachel Latinette, Spanish teacher at Belleville West

* Ian Hendrichs, science teacher at Belleville East

* Alyssa Glazebrook, special education teacher at Belleville East

* Jason McGovern, math teacher at the Alternative Day School

The board also approved the food service bid from Sodexo.

District 201 Superintendent Jeff Dosier updated board members about the fundraising effort for Turf for the Teams.

"We have 30 businesses that are interested in buying advertising sponsorship for the project," he said earlier this week. "The response from the community has been great."

The district is planning a fundraising dinner for Turf for the Teams Nov. 13 at Fischer's Restaurant in Belleville. Dosier said former St. Louis Cardinals player Ozzie Smith and Masters Golf Champion Bob Goalby are expected to attend the event.
