Homeless man arrested after fight over best panhandling spot near Walmart

News-DemocratJune 20, 2014

Police responded in force Friday morning to stop two homeless men fighting for "the best place to stand to panhandle" between the Walmart and Chick-fil-A on Carlyle Avenue in Belleville.

The Belleville Police Department responded at 11:26 a.m. to reports of a fight where one of the men had a knife, Police Capt. Don Sax said.

"It turned out to be two homeless people who are habitual panhandlers having a disagreement over who has the best place to stand to panhandle," Sax said. "One guy pulled a knife out. It was not used. It was tossed to the side."

No one was injured, Sax said.

One of the men is in custody at the Belleville Police Department and police will file for misdemeanor aggravated assault charges against him, Sax said.
