Edwardsville dentist Harvey Breckner was recently selected by the board of the Leaders in Healthcare Network as a Doctor of Excellence. The network selects physicians who have demonstrated success and leadership in their profession. Breckner recently spoke with business writer Will Buss about his recent recognition:
Q: What did you think about being selected"
A: "I think it's an honor because evidently I was nominated by my peers or patients, so I guess it's a reflection of what I do in my work. I feel gratitude for being recognized for my work. I do put a lot of time and effort into what I do. I am very proud of it. It's kind of a validation of my dentistry."
Q: How long have you been practicing?
A: "I have been practicing since 1983. That's when I graduated from dental school."
Q: What is your background?
A: "I have advanced training through the Air Force at the University of Texas in San Antonio in prosthodontics and advanced prosthodontics."
Q: What is prosthodontics?
A: "It's dental prosthetics (prosthetic dentistry). It's basically the replacement of missing parts. My specialty is bridge work, implants, dentures, partials, cosmetic and general dentistry."
Q: What do you think sets your practice apart from others?
A: "Not to be judgmental of my peers, but I think it's my focus on the patient and listening to what they need and doing what is best for them and just doing it at a very high standard. Which I think kind of comes naturally because I've been highly trained. I just really enjoy focusing on prosthodontics and enjoy doing something with implants and more difficult dental rehabilitation cases, which typically are people who do come to me and were referred to me for very complex cases. It's very rewarding."
Q: What has changed the most in your 30-plus years in dentistry?
A: "Dental implants, I guess, and the ability to replace the root of a tooth and going more toward implant technology than partials and dentures."
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: "I think it's just leaving the patient with a good cosmetic functional result. I enjoy what I do and I just enjoy seeing the smile on their faces when their teeth are working again and they look good, again."
