A Belleville man was charged with theft after he allegedly stole more than 30 landscaping plants from the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

Devance Jordan, 52, of 10 Creston Arms, was charged Tuesday with theft from a place of worship, a class 4 felony. St. Clair County Judge Fiss set Jordan's bail at $25,000. He was in custody Tuesday at the St. Clair County Jail.

On the morning of June 9, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department was called to the 9000 block of North DeMazenod Drive, part of Our Lady of the Snows, after someone removed six landscaping plants from various locations around the grounds.

The suspect returned on June 16 and removed 27 additional landscaping plants throughout the facility.

St. Clair County Investigator Jeffrey Hartsoe discovered evidence and surveillance recordings identifying Jordan as a suspect.
