Belleville police seek suspects in double shooting

News-DemocratJune 25, 2014

The Belleville Police Department is looking for two suspects involved in the shooting Tuesday night of a pair of men in the Dawn Heights neighborhood.

Police got a call at 10:20 p.m. with a report of shots fired and a suspect down. They found a 21-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the leg. He was conscious, and the injury was not thought to be life-threatening.

The man was taken to a Belleville hospital and then later transferred to a St. Louis medical center for additional treatment.

About two and a half hours later, a 20-year-old man showed up at a Belleville hospital and told the medical staff that he was shot in Dawn Heights. He had superficial gunshot wounds to both legs. He was treated and released. The second victim told police that he was shot in the same incident as the other man.

Detective Sgt. Mark Heffernan said the victims told police they were walking down Dawn Drive when they were approached by two men on foot. One of the men, described by police only as black males, pulled out a gun and began to fire.

Heffernan said the shooting may have stemmed from a previous altercation between the two pairs of men.

Police interviewed a number of witnesses Tuesday night, Heffernan said. Officers continued to follow leads on Wednesday.

Police asked that anyone with information call the Belleville Police Department at 234-1212.
