Granite City woman dies en route to hospital

A 44-year-old Granite City woman died Thursday on the way to the hospital.

Madison County Coroner Stephen Nonn identified the deceased as Tiney Marie Hunt.

Hunt, of 2433 E. 23rd St. Apt. C, was in the rear passenger seat of a late model Chevrolet Impala southbound on Century Drive in Granite City. For unknown reasons, the driver, who was not identified, lost control of the vehicle, veered off the road and struck the east side ditch of the roadway, Nonn said in a news release.

The driver was attempting to take Hunt to the Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, as she became unconscious and unresponsive while they were traveling home from Alton. They were in the process of calling 911 when the driver lost control of the car, according to Nonn.

He said an autopsy conducted Friday morning showed a preliminary finding that Hunt died as a result of a cardiac event and not because of any injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver was airlifted by Arch from the scene to St. Louis University Hospital. Her condition is unknown.

Another passenger was taken to Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation by the Granite City Police Department. Funeral arrangements for Hunt are pending.
