Union members working in the St. Clair County Highway Department will receive modest raises in the next three years, according to a contract approved Monday.

The St. Clair County Board has OK'd the contract with union members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers working in the county's Highway Department. The 30-plus effected county employees include such positions as highway maintenance workers and equipment operators.

The contract authorizes raises of 2 percent in 2015 and 2016. For an entry-level highway maintenance worker, the contract will raise their salary from the current $21.38 per hour to $22.24 per hour in 2016.

The contract includes a clause guaranteeing highway workers higher wages should county officials grant other county employees higher wage increases than 2 percent.

In other news, the board approved spending about $75,300 to renovate the county's Probation Office to meet federal requirements under the American Disabilities Act.
