Former St. Louis Cardinals SP Joel Pineiro released by Angels

The comeback attempt of former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Joel Pineiro has hit a roadblock.

The 35-year-old righty, who hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2011, was cut loose over the weekend by the Anaheim Angels. It was the second time this season that an organization has given up on him. Previously, Pineiro was trying to make it back to the big leagues with the Chicago Cubs.

Pineiro couldn't make it out of Class AA with the Cubs organization where he was 0-1 with a 4.43 ERA. He signed in early June with the Angels and was assigned to Class AAA Salt Lake City where he was 1-3 with a 7.48 ERA in four starts. Pineiro gave up 36 hits in 21 2/3 innings of work.

Pineiro is 104-93 for his career with a 4.41 ERA. He won 14 or more games three times over his career, most recently with St. Louis in 2009 when he was 15-12 with a 3.49 ERA.
