Hiding in a closet: Shiloh police find suspect accused of holding woman captive

Detectives with Shiloh Police Department located a wanted man hiding in the closet of a Belleville home Tuesday afternoon, according to Shiloh Police Chief Jim Stover.

On Monday, Shiloh police asked for the public's help in locating Wendell E. Bennett Jr., 23, of the 100 block of Hollandia Drive in Fairview Heights.

Bennett is facing nine felony charges for allegedly holding a woman against her will in an apartment in the 2400 block of Patrick Drive in Shiloh and forcing her into a car. Police made contact with the victim June 16.

Stover said Bennett was taken into custody without incident at 2 p.m. Tuesday. He was found hiding in a closet at an ex-girlfriend's home in the 9000 block of W. Main St. in Belleville.

Bennett faces seven felony charges of domestic battery and two felony charges of unlawful restraint related to the allegations.

Bennett also faces felony charges of aggravated battery, harassing witnesses and domestic battery related to offenses that allegedly happened on July 30, according to St. Clair County court records.
