Too quick to turn off the water

July 2, 2014

I live in Troy. My water bill was $64 and overdue. I have been broke for a whille trying to catch up on bills. My bill was due June 24. I did not have enough money yet to pay it until later that night or Wednesday.

They came to my house and turned it off at 10 a.m. on the due date. I found out from my neighbor that her water also got turned off that morning. Her bill was also only $64 also. She went to pay it and she said there were pages of people who had their water turned off.

I woke up at 7 a.m. go pay the bill and they made me pay a $25 reconnect fee as they did everyone they turned off. What a racket.

I later called the water department and asked whether it would have been OK if I made a payment online at 9 p.m. on the due date. She said yes. So I asked then why they turned off my water on due date and not on June 25. She had some excuse.

I know I was in the wrong for letting it get behind, but the water department screwed all the residents and made a ton of money with the reconnect fee. I am really mad and I feel this is just a huge racket to make more money for Troy.
