Pierce wins UMP Late Models race at Belle-Clair

A strong field of cars and drivers highlighted the UMP Summer Nationals on Tuesday at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville and Bobby Pierce won the $5,000 for finishing first in the UMP Late Models 40-lap feature race.

There were 35 UMP Late Models trying to make the show. Heat race winners were Pierce, Shannon Babb, Randy Korte and Brandon Sheppard. The semi went to Ryan Unzicker.

This race would stay green much of the 40 laps and there was lead changes. Pierce would job pass Korte for the lead first and maintain that for quite a few laps.

Ryan Unzicker was the car moving forward on the bottom. He started 17th and was in the top five at the end of the race running the bottom.

Babb would take command around lap 24 and Pierce and Sheppard were close behind.

Pierce would get a run coming out of turn one and put a slide job on Babb late in the race and it work, but he had right side sheet medal damage from hit the outside wall.

Pierce would go on an get his first win of the season on the Summer National tour. He was followed by Babb, Sheppard, Unzicker and Korte to complete the top five.

Mike Harrison won the $1,000 prize to the winner of the UMP Modifieds feature. Harrison led all 30 laps with Matt Mevert close behind trying to get the lead.

With only two cautions to slow that race it was a battle for the remaining positions.

Harrison would take the checkered flag with Matt Mevert, Devin Gilpin, NASCAR's Kenny Wallace and Tyler Nicely rounding out the top five in the 30-lap race.

Last Friday at Belle-Clair, Daryn Klein won the UMP Late Models topless feature race. However, after the race he was determined to be under weight and was disqualified, giving the win instead to Matt Wiedner. It was his first feature win.

Brian Bielong held off Rusty Griffaw in the UMP Modifieds feature on topless night.

Trevor Isaak won the Pure Stocks feature and Brad Knepper won the Kids Modz feature.

Highland Speedway

Highland Speedway is will play host to the DIRTCar Racing UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour on Saturday featuring a $10,000 to win feature race for UMP Late Models and $1,000 to win for UMP Summit Modifieds.

This is the largest paying race that Highland Speedway holds each year and features some of the region and Midwest's top drivers.

Grandstands open at 3 p.m. and an autograph session for children will be held 4-5 p.m. Hot laps are at 5:30 p.m. with qualifying at 5:45 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

Box seats are $30, general admission is $28 and children 10-under are free with a paid adult admission.

Tri-City Speedway

Feature winners last Friday at Tri-City Speedway near Granite City were Tony Jackson, Jr. (UMP Late Models), Highland's Mike Harrison (UMP Modifieds), Kevin Morrow (B-Modifieds), Alton's Tony Walker (Street Stocks) and Anthony Sunshine (Factory Stock-4 cylinder/UMP Sport Compacts).

The next big event coming to Tri-City is the Battle at the Beach 50 on July 11 with Lucas Oil Late Models running for $10,000 to win. UMP Modifieds are running for $1,000 to win and UMP Crate Late Models will run for $700 to win.

Federated Auto Parts Raceway

Brian Birkhofer was the Super Late Models feature winner last Saturday at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo. Billy Moyer was second and Bobby Pierce was third.

Mike Harrison claimed his DIRTcar Summit Racing equipment series-leading third feature win, earning $1,000 for winning the Modifieds main event. Matt Brucato was the Sportsman feature winner.

There is no racing this weekend at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55.
