GOP record needs revising

July 8, 2014

Upon reading Ray Sigler's letter, "Great record for Republicans," my immediate response was to quote the car rental commercial: "Not exactly."

The fight for the Voting Rights Act was jointly led by Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield and Minority Leader Everett Dirksen of Illinois. In 2014 Dirksen would be labeled a "RINO" and targeted for defeat by the Tea Partiers.

Richard Nixon ended the Vietnam War in 1973, but on essentially the same terms the North Vietnamese offered him in 1969. That four-year delay cost 21,000 American service members their lives.

The balanced budgets of the mid 1990s, actually from 1998-2001, were due to Bill Clinton's 1993 increase in taxes on the wealthy (every single Republican voted against it), and the last balanced budget before that was Democrat Lyndon Johnson's balanced budget of 1969.

Finally, Ronald Reagan did not end the Cold War. The Soviet Union was defeated by a multi-generational, multi-national, bi-partisan effort that lasted more than 40 years.

But if a single person is to get credit, it would be Karol Jozef Wojtyla, more commonly known as Pope John Paul II, and most likely to be known in the future as Pope Saint John Paul II.
