The O’Fallon Junior High Baseball/Softball Classic is getting a new name in 2014.

Tracy Lauderdale, athletic director at Amelia Carriel Junior High School who has coordinated the event for the past two decades, said the 21st annual tournament, and all future classics, will be called the O’Fallon Matt Seipp Classic to honor the late O’Fallon Township High School teacher and his family for the work they have done to promote baseball in O’Fallon.

Seipp died in May 2013 at the age of 33 after suffering a head injury in a fall from a ladder.

“Matt was my assistant coach during the first year of the classic,” Lauderdale said. “I will never forget that first year of the Classic because it was especially memorable having young Matt Seipp by my side helping me coach.”

Lauderdale said the classic, which will run from Aug. 12-15 at the O’Fallon Sports Park, is considered to be the premier preseason junior high school baseball and softball tournament in the state.

It also is the longest running tournament of its kind in Illinois.

Individuals or organizations interested in supporting the classic through advertising in its program should contact Lauderdale at or at (618) 920-9963 before Monday, Aug. 4.
