Charles Joseph Burgess, 82, of Highland died Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at his daughters home in Mulberry Grove.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on July 13 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland and from 8 to 10 a.m. on July 14 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on July 14 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland, with Father Paul Kala, pastor of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Greenville, officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Highland. He was born on Nov. 15, 1931, in Edwardsville to Kester and Tillie (Hoppe) Burgess. On Jan. 20, 1951, he married Colleen M. Frey. She passed away on Oct. 25, 2010. Mr. Burgess graduated from Edwardsville High School in 1949. In 1953, he moved to Highland.
He worked for Franciscohne Junk Yard and Wagner Electric in Edwardsville. He worked for Southern Equipment in St. Louis for 10 years, retiring at age 63.
In their younger years, he and his family enjoyed camping. They traveled to Las Vegas, Nev., Tunica, Miss., and various casinos, especially with friends, Don and Shirley Schaffer.
He was an avid bowler and bowled for many years at Hi-Top Bowl in Highland. He also enjoyed woodworking.
He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland. Survivors include a son, Tom C. (Lori) Burgess of Pierron; daughters, Lisa L. (Michael) Hunter of Pacific, Mo., and Cynthia J. (Julie J.) Burgess of Mulberry Grove; grandchildren, Jonathon C. (Michelle) Huhn of Mulberry Grove, Shaun R. (fiancee Katie Heath) Huhn of New Orleans, La., and Brett T. Burgess of Pierron; great-grandchildren, Marissa E. Huhn, Joshua E. Huhn and Myah C. Huhn; step-grandchildren, April J. (Josh) Redou of Mulberry Grove, Alison D. Pickard, Amanda K. (Kelley) Voyles of Sorento, Daniel A. Dierkes of Pocahontas and Stephanie M. Dierkes of Livingston; step-great-grandchildren, Marcus D. Redou, Matthew D. Redou, Makenzie D. Redou, Maxwell D. Redou, Sierra R. Voyles, Skylar D. Voyles and Autumn L. Dierkes. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tillie Burgess Franciscohne Peck; his father; a daughter, Catherine L. Cathy Huhn, who died on Aug. 21, 2003; and his step-father, Pete Franciscohne.
