Can the Belleville hospitals cooperate?

July 12, 2014

It's sad to see the conflict redeveloping between St. Elizabeth's and Memorial hospitals. It went on for years before apparently ending less than a decade ago.

The renewed conflict has been in the process for months and preceded the announced move of St. E's to Shiloh.

Some of the doctors I have are primarily associated with St. Elizabeth's and others with Memorial. It hasn't been a problem yet but I fear that it may in the future.

As a significant start to ending the conflict and serve the Belleville city center community, I suggest that St. E's and Memorial agree to establish a joint emergency room and urgent care center at or near the present location of St. Elizabeth's. Both hospitals would equally fund the facility.

This should satisfy the highly publicized concerns of Belleville Mayor Mark Eckert and also clear the way for the move of St. Elizabeth's to a new location in Shiloh.
