Railroad crossing maintenance that had Green Mount Road traffic diverted last week for a day will have Belleville traffic in detours this week and next.

Norfolk Southern is performing "regular and scheduled maintenance on all our lines," says spokesman Robin Chapman.

The crossing on Second Street, near Optimist Park, will be worked on Tuesday and Wednesday, Chapman said.

Illinois 159, near North End Park, will be closed Monday through Wednesday. The Illinois Department of Transportation will provide a marked detour.

Work is not affecting freight traffic, he said.

This particular line is one of two that runs through West Belleville between North Belt West and West Main, according to online maps.

"We're just making sure the line is well-maintained, that crossings are safe and comfortable for drivers to ride over," Chapman said.
