Nighttime lane restrictions on Canal Bridge

News-DemocratJuly 14, 2014

Metro motorists got the weekend to enjoy fully opened westbound lanes on Interstate 270 across the Mississippi River. Starting at 9 p.m. Monday, weather permitting, westbound lanes across the new Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge will be reduced to remove bridge deck forms.

All westbound lanes will reopen at 5 a.m. The work is expected to be completed by Thursday.

Westbound lanes opened on the Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge on Friday. Barry Gibbs, supervising field engineer for the Illinois Department of Transportation, said he expects Walsh Construction Company will be done with the work on the eastbound lanes in September so the whole bridge will be open by the end of that month.

The old bridge will be demolished after that.
