Voting rights as it happened

July 18, 2014

It surprises me that letters that are so ill-informed are written by people like John Krein. Here are the facts of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

The origins of the idea came from John F. Kennedy (a really good Democratic president). Sens. Mike Mansfield, and Everett Dirksen did cooperate on the bill, but the bill was written by Dirksen and Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach. Thus it was known as the Dirksenbach Bill. The bill would not have advanced out of the Senate (a near unanimous vote) without a Republican vote of 30-2.

I voted for President Nixon in 1968 because I thought he would end the senseless war started by the Democrats. I voted for the Democratic candidate in 1972 because I thought he would try to end the war. Nixon won without my vote and did, in fact, end the war (but Krein had to have his caveat).

Krein got it wrong again about the balanced budget in the 1990s. It was the Contract With America that swept Democrats out of the House in 1994, which ended so much waste in the federal budget (thus bringing about balance).

Reagan's missile shield brought the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Karol Woltyla (Pope John Paul II) had no more role in the collapse than he was a purveyor of Christianity. I do hope he is a saint since Holy Scripture calls all Christians saints.
