BELLEVILLE --
The one-two punch of Cahokia's Earnest Winters and Darien Donald came through again Friday at the Class AA Belleville East Track and Field Sectional.
With the title on the line, Winters and Donald finished first and second in the 200 meters as the two-time defending state champions held off rival East St. Louis for the title.
Cahokia's London Davis owned the shot put and discus events, helping the Comanches finish with 135 points, five more than the Flyers, who placed second behind the Comanches at the state meet in 2007.
And while the win gives the Comanches the edge, the two prep powers will meet again May 23-24 at Charleston's O'Brien Stadium for the Class AA State Track and Field Meet.
The Comanches also got wins from Donald in the 400 meters and their 400 and 800 relays.
In the 400 relay, the Comanches finished with a time of 41.1 seconds to nip the Flyers in what turned out to be the night's best race.
Kendrick McRath completed the Comanches' victories by winning the triple jump.
East St. Louis got wins from Patrick Fenderson in the high jump, Ryan Miller in the 110 high hurdles and Kraig Appleton in the 300 intermediate hurdles. The Flyers also won the 1,600 relay.
Belleville West advanced in all four of its relays to state for the second straight year and also got a strong effort from senior Jonathon Cripe, who won the 800 and also qualified in the 1,600.
Travis Manning also qualified in the 100 hurdles for the Maroons as coach Patton Segraves team put on another excellent performance.
"We're having another great night, and these kids have really worked for it," Segraves said. "I thought Jon (Cripe) ran a great race in the 800 meters. We wanted to go out fast and see if we could wear down Dominique (Manley), of Collinsville. We did that."
Belleville East was led by Roger Jones, who won the long jump and then also qualified in the 200. The Lancers also qualified in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays. Also advancing from East were Daryl Rice (high jump), Justin Washington (110 hurdles) and Forrest Knight (300 meter hurdles).
O'Fallon got wins from Matt Coon in the 1,600 and Aaron Rodriguez in the pole vault. Collinsville's Lewis won the 3,200 while Manley moved on with a second-place finish in the 800.
Mascoutah's Mike Milton advanced in the 110 hurdles and long jump. Mater Dei's Edwin Smith qualified in the long jump.
