A sample lot of PF-1 variety peaches, picked on Wednesday May 23. The peach crop is way ahead of schedule, and peaches will be available for sale at the Eckert's Orchards Country Store beginning this Saturday, May 26. The pick-your-own wagon rides out to the peach orchards should start the first week of July, depending on the weather conditions between now and then. Eckert's Orchards raises 30 varieties of peaches, each with various maturity dates. These PF-1 peaches are "early" peaches, while a variety like "Loring" may be a few weeks behind them, in terms of their ripeness. This is the first time in the 175 year history of Eckert's Orchards that peach sales will begin in May, due to the early blooms which are followed by early harvests. The blooms were about three weeks earlier this year, than in previous years. This is a direct reflection of the National Weather Service statistics that this year has been the warmest start to a calendar year on record in St. Louis and other Midwest cities, particularly the month of March which saw mean temperatures 15 degrees above average. In addition to the fresh peaches, over the upcoming Memorial Day weekend, Eckert's will host their annual Memorial Weekend Festival, with food, live entertainment, free wagon rides, a petting farm, and pony and carnival rides.
