A $264,000 street reconstruction project promises to improve a major thoroughfare in O'Fallon, but it may also cause headaches for summer commuters.
The O'Fallon City Council on Monday night approved having Veile Construction in Belleville make numerous improvements to North Lincoln Avenue. The project will rebuild existing roadways and build curbs, gutters and handicap accessible sidewalks.
The construction site begins just south of Monroe Street and ends just north of East Jackson Street. Construction will begin in early June and is expected to last for two months.
During construction, the road will be closed to through traffic with limited access to residents. The city plans to provide detour routes around the construction site.
The project originally was intended to be completed next summer, but a harsh winter caused the city to push the project to this summer. Frequent freezes and subsequent thaws in late winter wreaked havoc to the street's pavement causing an unexpected amount of damage.
This is the third phase of the project, with the previous two phases completed in the summers of 2006 and 2007.
Veile Construction also was the contractor for the construction of Seven Hills Road from Highway 50 to the railroad bridge near State Street in O'Fallon
