A Granite City woman was charged Tuesday with felony aggravated battery after police said she hit her husband's ex-wife outside the Madison County Courthouse after a hearing.

Melissa S. Thomas, 28, of 227 W. Pontoon Road, was taken into custody 4 p.m. Monday at the courthouse at 155 N. Main St. in Edwardsville, Madison County Sheriff's Capt. Brad Wells stated in a news release.

"The charge was enhanced to a felony because the offense happened on public property," Wells stated.

Thomas is being held at the county jail in lieu of $40,000 bail.

The warrant was signed by Judge Janet Heflin.
